Cookie policy
Last updated 1 January 2026. This page lists every cookie and local storage item this site can place on your device, what each one is for, and how to refuse or delete them.
1. What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. Related technologies include local storage and session storage, which also keep small amounts of data on your device but are not sent with every request. We use the word "cookies" below to cover all of these.
Cookies are either strictly necessary — the site cannot function correctly without them — or optional. Optional cookies are only placed after you give consent through our banner. Refusing them does not reduce access to any article on this site.
2. Categories we use
Strictly necessary
| Name | Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| pq_consent | Local storage | Records whether you accepted, rejected or customised optional cookies so the banner is not shown again | 12 months |
| pq_consent_cats | Local storage | Stores which optional categories you enabled in the preferences panel | 12 months |
| pq_session | Session cookie | Maintains request integrity and basic abuse protection on the contact form | Until the browser closes |
Analytics — consent required
| Name | Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| pq_stats_id | First-party cookie | Distinguishes one visit from another so page counts are not double-recorded; contains no name or email | 13 months |
| pq_stats_ses | First-party cookie | Groups page views within a single visit to measure how guides are read in sequence | 30 minutes of inactivity |
| pq_referrer | Session storage | Records the referring source for the current visit so we know which guides are found via search or links | Until the tab closes |
Functional — consent required
| Name | Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| pq_motion | Local storage | Remembers a reduced-motion preference you set on the site, in addition to your operating system setting | 6 months |
| pq_last_guide | Local storage | Remembers the last route guide you read so we can offer a "continue reading" link | 3 months |
| pq_form_draft | Session storage | Preserves an unsent contact form message if you navigate away and return in the same tab | Until the tab closes |
We do not use advertising, retargeting or cross-site tracking cookies, and we do not embed social media widgets that set third-party cookies. If that changes we will update this page and request consent again.
3. Changing your choice on this site
Your decision is stored on your own device. To review or change it, clear this site's cookies and storage in your browser and reload any page — the consent banner will reappear and you can choose again, including through the Preferences panel where each optional category can be toggled independently.
4. Browser-level controls
Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies, either globally or per site. Blocking all cookies may break functionality on many websites, including this one's consent memory.
- Google Chrome — Clear, allow and manage cookies
- Mozilla Firefox — Cookies information stored on your computer
- Apple Safari — Safari User Guide
- Microsoft Edge — Microsoft Edge help
Most browsers also offer a private or incognito mode that discards cookies when the window closes, and general background on cookie management is available at allaboutcookies.org.
5. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
Where your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as a valid request to refuse optional cookies and we will not set analytics or functional items unless you subsequently opt in through the banner. Legacy Do Not Track headers are handled in the same way.
6. Legal basis and further information
Strictly necessary cookies are set on the basis of our legitimate interest in operating a secure, working website. All other cookies are set only with your consent, which you may withdraw at any time. For the wider picture of how we handle personal data, including your access, deletion and objection rights, see our privacy policy.
